Us divers, in the scuba diving industry, we usually complain that we don’t do enough to promote scuba diving to the new generations. Well… today good news.

Welcome to the Scuba Diving Merit Badge: Thi merit badge, the first new one in three years, will officially be released on Dec. 1 when it will be available in Scout Shops and online at scoutstuff.org.

It’s the result of a newly announced partnership between the BSA and PADI, the Professional Association of Diving Instructors. Officials at the BSA determined that 84 percent of PADI IDC Scouts were interested in the merit badge, and so it was fast-tracked for adoption.

It’s one of five merit badges being released in the next 12 months. The other four are Inventing (first quarter 2010), Geocaching (second quarter 2010), Scouting Heritage (second quarter 2010), and Robotics (fourth quarter 2010).

But Scuba will arrive first, and so the BSA has established some key facts that Scouters should know about the merit badge:

* Completing the Scuba Diving merit badge will result in the boy achieving an open-water certification, enabling him to dive around the world with the appropriate supervision, based on his age.
* There are two important roles for this merit badge: the merit badge counselor and a certified dive instructor. Sometimes this may be the same person, but more likely, the counselor will be an existing BSA adult member.
* The instructor will be one certified by one of a number of instructional agencies, but he or she does not have to be a BSA member.
* Earning the Scuba Diving merit badge is open to all Boy Scout-age youth. There are, however, limitations based on age with respect to how deep and with whom a boy can dive. These limitations vary by certifying organization.
* Completion of the Swimming merit badge is a requirement of the merit badge and must be completed prior to entering into scuba training portion of the requirements.

* Boys with a current open water certification will not have to recertify in order to earn the merit badge. They will, however, have to have completed the Swimming merit badge, present their certification to the merit badge counselor and complete all the other requirements.

* There are three important pieces of information which must be fully reviewed by the merit badge counselor prior to approving any Scout for the merit badge: the merit badge requirements, the notes to counselor and the scuba policy of the Guide to Safe Scouting.

That’s why I thought this idea is pretty cool and a clear sign that to protect life, you need to understand it first. Ministers in the Maldives have taken diving lessons ahead of an underwater cabinet meeting that will highlight the threat global warming and rising sea levels pose to the low-lying atoll nation.

President Mohamed Nasheed will chair the meeting on October 17 ahead of the world climate change summit in Copenhagen in December, a spokesman told AFP from the islands’ capital, Male.

He said the 14-member cabinet were taught scuba-diving basics over the weekend. Nasheed was not present as he is already a certified diver.

“The cabinet will don wet suits and scuba equipment and dive to a depth of six metres (20 feet), where a special meeting of the cabinet will be convened,” the spokesman, who declined to be named, said.

“They will then ratify a pledge calling on other nations to slash greenhouse gas emissions ahead of the Copenhagen meeting.”

Cabinet members will communicate using whiteboards and hand signals. Let’s hope once they get hooked they will work towards protecting Maldives precious resources.

————————————————————–

Looking to change your life? Consider today IDC Bali as an option today

—————————————————————

Millions and millions of future Indian divers interested in learning that Diving is Fun and that after diving, we need to Meet People, go Places, And Spend Money in PADI. Anyway… seriously the exotic water sport, scuba diving, is all set to make huge splash in the Indian waters with the country holding out a potential of becoming a booming industry over the next five years, industry sources said.

“We believe the time has come for India to become a major force in the world of scuba diving. It has the potential of becoming a billion dollar industry over the next five years,” said Rohaan Sulaiman, President Bangalore Dive Club, which will be launched on June 14.

Worldwide, the scuba diving industry, including the hospitality factor was estimated to be USD 47 billion, said Madhava Reddy, Founder Director of Planet Scuba India, a scuba diving inland centre, with a PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) five star diving centre.

“Today the contribution of scuba diving may be miniscule, but in five years, with the plans under implementation, this adventure will be a significant contributor to sea-based tourism,” he said. Information received also suggest that some prominent names were evincing keen interest in developing it.

Lack of resources and infrastructure could have been the reasons why the sport had not picked up ealier in India despite having a vast coastline, huge population and an economy that was growing, Reddy said.

India which had less less than five dive centres five years ago today boasts of 22 dive centres. “The number is expected to go upto 50 in three to five years” Reddy said.

PADI Americas is rolling out the next generation in electronic dive planning – the Electronic Recreational

Dive Planner, Multilevel version (eRDPML). Developed by Diving Science and Technology (DSAT) and distributed by PADI, the new product makes planning single depth and multilevel dives easier than ever.

The eRDPML is not a dive computer, but an electronic dive table that allows you to plan single depth and multilevel dives. While the first generation eRDP provided the same information as the Recreational Dive Planner (RDP) Table version, the eRDPML provides the same information as PADI’s multilevel dive planner, The Wheel®, only in an electronic format.

“The eRDPML is the best thing since sliced bread, indoor plumbing, thinking-outside-the-box, Got Milk? and any other cliché you can mindlessly rattle off,” says Karl Shreeves, DSAT Technical Development Executive. “From a diving point of view, I love it because it gives you dive table dependability with calculator simplicity. For new divers, and even some experienced ones, mastering dive planning is now quick and easy. And, for PADI Instructors, this translates into more practical time in the water and less time reviewing tables in the classroom.”

The eRDPML includes some great, new features:

* the ability to plan single depth and multilevel dives
* a new flip cover design with the General Guidelines clearly displayed inside
* a user-friendly interface with large keys and a wide display window
* a compact user manual positioned under the device
* operates in imperial or metric

Whether you’re a seasoned dive professional or someone who just loves diving, you’ll find the eRDPML is easier to use than conventional dive tables and can increase bottom time by allowing dive planning in two meter/five foot increments.

Start planning your multilevel dives the easy way, with the new eRDPML. PADI Members may order the new eRDPML today by contacting their regional manager or sales consultant at their local PADI Office. To find out how you can take advantage of all PADI’s innovative products and services, contact Jeff Nadler , PADI Americas International Resort and Retailers Associations manager at +1 949 858 7234, ext. 2660.

Others promise…PADI delivers.

Exceptional Dive Leaders have that “special something” that sets them apart from the crowd. It’s not as mysterious as it sounds. Most of the time, that “special something” is the sheer determination to maintain positive habits of learning and teaching. Do you want to join the ranks of highly effective Dive Leaders? You can start with these seven proven boosters.

1. Increase Your Self-Discipline – If you are like most people, you find it easy to do bang-up job when you are in high spirits. The real test comes when you are not feeling motivated or particularly energetic. Are these good enough reasons to snap at customers or behave like a nasty martyr? No!

As Dive Leaders, like it or not, you are a role model. You set the standard when it comes to personal behavior, so make sure that standard is high. A moment of impulsiveness can tear your students learning ability. The signs of self-control include “being unfazed under stress or handling a person without lashing out in return.”

Remember people learn because of curiosity and frustration. Sometimes it is even both. Notice that in frustration you see three very important letters – F U N… Make it fun and rewarding

2. Show Consistent Kindness – Good Dive Leaders don’t throw their weight around or rely on intimidation to get results. Do you? Any job–especially Dive Leaders–involves the support and assistance of others. You can’t perform effectively as a one-man band.

One impressive Dive Leader was aware of the power of this habit. This person always made it a point to say “good job” to the students. The class may have been large, but this did not ! deter he r from interacting with everyone. She would arrive at class early to chat with the students. Talk about a feeling of respect! This person knew that many of these “students” were either comfortable or uncomfortable. The more encouragement they felt, the more pride they would take in “their” scuba class.

3. Stretch Goals – What if the following words came out of an airplane loudspeaker: “Folks, I have good news and bad news. The bad news is we have lost our direction finder and one engine. The good news is we have a tail wind, so wherever we’re going we will get there at a rate of 600 miles an hour.” The bad news certainly outweighs the good, right? So it is with your ability to encourage or discourage students. You should work toward one goal with every student. “The only way you become successful in life is by helping someone else become successful first.” Make sure your students are successful divers and they will bring so many more customers and MAKE you successful. Thus, the quote!

4. Welcome Criticism – Criticism may sting, but you must embrace feedback and not avoid it. After all, how else will you know what to improve upon? Don’t fool yourself into thinking other opinions don’t matter. In the business world, your credibility and reputation play a key role in how far–and how quickly–you move ahead. Soliciting input from others always leaves you with a clearer view of your blind spots. Becoming defensive and hostile when faced with constructive criticism will insulate you from the truth and greatly limit your potential.

Have you asked your students what you could be doing better? You might be surprised at how revealing their answers will be. Are you worried that they won’t be candid with you? Ask your questio! ns in a non-threatening manner. For example: “I’m always interested in improving my people skills. Can you give me some insight on how I can be more effective?” This tactic is safe, constructive, and much better than bluntly asking, “What am I doing wrong?”

Are you listening to the customer who ultimately writes your check?

5. Be a Solution-Finder, Not a Problem-Identifier – It takes no particular talent to find fault, but many behave as though their “gift” must be shared again and again. You may know people who constantly nit-pick about decisions. These professional problem-identifiers generally get you stuck in life. Choosing to criticize or blame shows great disloyalty and sets a lousy example. You have a duty to stand behind the powers that be, regardless of whether or not you agree whole-heartedly with their decisions.

Do you have to suffer in silence when you disagree vehemently with something? Not at all! You can develop the habit of criticizing positively by recommending a more perfect solution.

6. Show Boundless Enthusiasm – Enthusiasm is contagious, and successful Dive Leaders realize the effect their attitude has on their mood and productivity. Constantly whining and complaining depletes valuable resources of energy. Can you afford it? The same situation, when presented to positive and negative personalities, will be perceived differently. An optimist looks forward to change and solves tough problems with enthusiasm. Good things seem to routinely come their way!

Students will absorb your energy if you show a passion for diving. In fact, many will mold themselves after you in terms of their energy level and equipment. If you refuse to show enthusiasm, don’t be surprised when you find yourself ! not lead ing a group to go diving or to not be called the next time a class is available.

7. Embrace Those Opportunities – Great opportunities are often disguised. Are you like so many other Dive Leaders, content to sit back and wait for opportunities to appear on a silver platter? You could wait forever. Instead of waiting for “them” to take care of it, get busy, show some initiative, and take a risk. Organizations change when Dive Leaders seize opportunities with boldness and confidence.

Developing successful habits isn’t easy. Like anything worthwhile, it takes commitment and conviction. If these habits were simple, every single Dive Instructor would have already put them into practice, and that’s just not the case. Are you up to the challenge?

Good Luck!

The program includes a high quality full color manual. Training topics covered include: The Effects of Light Underwater, Your Digital Photography Equipment, How to Use Your Digital Camera System, Underwater Photography Basics, Image Composition, and Image Processing.

Students may use a compact digital camera system or a digital single lens reflex camera because the information contained in the manual applies to all types and configurations of underwater camera equipment. In addition, the program provides distinct information for specific types of camera systems where necessary. We¹ve also included valuable information and step-by-step procedures about properly composing underwater images using proven, time-tested techniques. There is also an entire section devoted to teaching how to edit photos the same way the professionals do, using a PC or Macintosh.

We’ve created the most complete, easy to understand Digital Underwater Photography training system available. The product will be available for purchase after DEMA 2007. Visit us at booth 1719 to check out this new product.

So we get the whole idea of E-learning.
You connect your PC, you get information about how to dive, you do your little knowledge reviews and then you arrive to the dive center ready to dive…. right? Yep, bye bye the personal contact with an experienced instructor… who needs that? No one. We are too busy… we want things fast and we want them now!

At ScubaHerald we accept technology, hey, this is an online media… so in theory we are supposed to be tech junkies… that’s why we decided to go the painful way, we decided to visit PADI IDC virtual Island.

First Step: download Secondlife game – go to the kitchen and have a long cup of tea…. yes my friends, that is the first step. To download a long and heavy game that in theory you should not have in your PC unless you are an online reality freak. … so you download the game, you install it and you get ready to join a virtual world where it is easy to get confused or find where to go or what do to. But hey, who cares? This is the world of PADI Virtual Island… where everything is so easy….

First thing create your Character….

NAME: ScubaMaster LAST NAME: Rosca

After over 30 minutes of misses and tries, we finally find our way around this virtual messy universe, where a teletransport system (obviously! Tele transport, how did we missed this before!) will take us anywhere in the Second Life universe.

Ok, so we type PADI and here we begin the PADI world downfall. First surprise: PADI Isand is not the first result provided…. ohh… no, it seems users with the name PADI are hundreds, so finding the PADI island keeps getting a harder per minute.

But, it is not time to fail, let’s keep trying….

P…A…. D … I … we try to find a place called PADI Island…

(so after a few minutes … we finally find the Island… ) and like any virtual diver the Teletransporter will take us flying to the PADI Virtual HQ (Mmm what happens if you virtually fly after a virtual dive?? ).

So as soon as we arrive our journalist ScubaMaster Rosca, gets ambushed by marketing signs everywhere. Why Dive? Go Pro! Continuing Education etc..
The place looks great I have to confess, very clean, very “AT PADI WE DO THINGS BIG” , very organized… and also very empty.

OK yes my PADI members and PADI fanatics out there, I have to be honest, this is my second time in this Second Life messy place, and I still don’t find any virtual soul here, no one to chat to… no one to tell me about how great diving with PADI is.

Where are all the guys from PADI???

Where are all the young models from the Open water Video? Where is Jessica Alba? Mmm I’m confused. I feel alone. Alone on a virtual diving island, with no dive sites to dive, with no virtual divers to do safety checks, with no virtual PADI dive centers to take me virtually diving … (did I mention Virtual enough times?)

So what is the point of this new marketing strategy? Where are all my virtual buddies? Where are all the divers talking about their diving experiences? Maybe in the virtual PADI tavern (Is there something like that in Second Life?)?

ScubaMaster Roca hung around 20 minutes in the building, and the idea is quite cool for the first 2 minutes, (and only if you achieve to find the place) , but then whole virtual experience becomes virtually stupid. Ok, don’t crucify me yet if you are a hardcore virtual addict, but… what is the whole idea? I know… to reach new markets… to reach the generation X that all the dive industry is trying to reach…. but the funny thing is : there is no-one out there….!
There is not one soul.,.. non even a virtual ghost…. the place seems like a virtual mental hospital…too plain… too plastic… too dam boring… even the videos that are supposed to attract you, seem like standard publicity of your local BANK.

So PADI Virtual Island was virtually a pain…. so far the island hasn’t attracted more than 400 virtual visitors since its creation.., and it seems amazing that PADI want’s to resell marketing in this virtual desert to other dive centers (Join now! Reach thousands of members! – is that the slogan?).

So from my little corner I wonder today: Aren’t divers people that enjoy the outdoors? Or are divers silicon valley rat labs? How many of you out there have a second life in a virtual game??? Well, if you are a Second Life addict, may be you want to sell your dive gear and buy some virtual scuba tanks and go as deep as you can, because this is Second Life.

You can’t virtually bend … but you can always pay some extra dollars to PADI, in the real world, or in the strange world of Virtual stupidity.

So stop reading this, run away from the temptation of downloading this time wasting game, turn off your PC, call your friends, book a dive holiday today, and forget about any second lifes, there are no second chances, you only have one life, and it is short… dive more… waste less time… live better…

We’ve all seen them; when conducting courses, most of us carry this type of safety equipment to meet standards and many of us may even have sold some. Surface Marker Buoys (SMB)/safety sausages/delayed SMBs. Surface Marker Buoys serve a wide range of purposes, e.g. allowing shore cover / boat support to identify an ascending diver; alerting boat traffic to the presence of a diver; providing a visual reference for ascending divers

Until recently, operation of these devices was left to observation, trial and error, or applied learning was derived from object recovery and lift bag use. Now you can teach divers to safely and competently operate a (delayed) SMB using a new Distinctive Specialty developed by PADI: SMB Diver.

The popularity of SMB use is particularly apparent in areas with heavy boat traffic, or where divers may be drifting in a current. It may also be best practice in your local area. Delayed or DSMBs are also popular where divers are unable to return to the shot line to ascend, or where divers may not have a visual reference once they end the dive.

The SMB Diver distinctive specialty course teaches entry-level or higher certified divers the knowledge and skills required for the safe use of SMBs and delayed SMBs over two Open Water dives. During open water training your students will practise skills such as stowage of SMB and reel, stationary deployment, towing of an SMB during a tour and DSMB reel ascents and safety stops.

To be eligible to teach this specialty, you must be in current, renewed teaching status, a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor or higher level member, have issued at least 25 diver certifications and have experienced at least 20 dives using delayed or traditional Surface Marker Buoys.

Scuba Divers are made of many people that are tired of the usual tedious workday, followed by the nerve-racking task of driving; add all the noise pollution it instigates. That’s before everything else scuba divers encounter in these fast paced times outside of scuba diving. Some scuba divers go even further by finding a career in scuba diving. Some become diving instructors themselves. They find their career in scuba diving rejuvenating compared to many other choices.

Scuba diving doesn’t usually start there though. It usually starts where many other’s scuba diving began; with the open water course. Then they move onto the advanced course and learn much more and realize they really enjoy all that scuba diving has to offer. They see diving underwater in a whole new way, and really want to share that with others as well. Often this leads them to work towards a career in scuba diving instruction.

It’s not all simple courses and then going to work with your new career in scuba diving. You need to be a master at it. This of course means a lot of diving time in a variety of situations and an instructor or more. You need to know how to dive and survive well. With that, as a scuba diving instructor you will be able to bring others up to scuba diving. You need to know what they have to, to dive safely. This is quite a worthy career!

Many look up to the diving instructor assuming they know it all about scuba diving. Since the potential to inspire them can be great or potentially heartbreaking, you really do need to know anything they need to know, and more! When you don’t, you need to admit that as well! If your journey is endlessly learning more when diving in many situations, you should seriously consider a career in scuba diving as an instructor.

Though also consider that you need to deal with people, and follow timelines. You need to be able to teach your students in a short time, how to remain safe and alive when scuba diving. This is quite a responsibility. If you feel this is for you, it’s time we look further towards your career in scuba diving instruction.

To become a diving instructor you must first be a Dive master. With that out of the way, then you have to take the Instructor Development Course (PADI IDC). This extensive course will take you deeper into diving than you have been. It will educate you on diving standards, safety, students, the PADI system, and relevant law. To be all you can be you will definitely want to master every bit of it. That way when you begin your career in scuba diving instruction, you will be well versed from the start. Of course beyond that, experience will follow that will truly make you a complete export in your craft.

As with anything these days, while working on your career in scuba diving, you can expect much product marketing information, as well as sales literature too. While it’s not wise to buy everything, you should understand the market, as it does affect your students as well. So think about it. Becoming a scuba diving instructor can be a great change in your lifetime… and for sure your days will never be boring again.
