It is extremely sad when you do what you love and things like this happen. We all know how dangerous it’s cave diving, but when a real expert dies in an incident like today’s … the whole scuba diving community feels a bit emptier.

As reported by News.com.au , cave diver Agnes Milowka ran out of air and suffocated after becoming disorientated, says a fellow diver who has seen her body.

Dr Richard Harris, a close friend of 29-year-old Ms Milowka, is part of the retrieval team which has been trying to clear the way for police divers to pull her body from Tank Cave, near Mount Gambier.

Dr Harris, who has seen Ms Milowka’s body submerged in 20m of water about 550m from the cave entrance, says she did not become trapped before her death.

Agnes Milowka was for sure one of the best cave divers in Australia, she had recently worked as a stunt diver for James Cameron’s new blockbuster Sanctum 3D, which is now showing across Australia.

More and more caves are explored all over the region. It’s a safe activity, as long as people are properly trained and follow safe standard practices.

One of the major leading association worldwide, the National Association of Cave

Diving (NACD), was established in 1968 for the purpose of achieving closer

cooperation and understanding among members of the cave and recreational diving

communities (and the general public) so they may work together toward the common

goal of increasing safety in cavern and cave diving.

Cedric Verdier was recently appointed by the NACD as a Safety Officer for

South-East Asia. His duties are to answer all your questions regarding safety

and education, but also to work toward a better understanding of the cave

diving specific issues when it comes to authorities and governmental bodies.

Cedric is a veteran Cave Diving Instructor Trainer based in Thailand. He

recently explored some deep cave systems to an Asian Record of 200m/655ft.

Please don’t hesitate to contact him at info@cedricverdier.com

The day that my wife had my first child, she wrote a list of “dangerous things” that I wasn’t supposed to do or try every again: Cave diving was one of them. I got a copy from Facing Darkness a few weeks ago and I have seen this Film over 5 times already.

The film by Nathalie Lasselin not only gives a complete and overall introduction to the art of cave diving, but also tries to inspire the viewer about the beauty and magic surrounding cave diving. The video brings the basics of cave diving theory in a clear and easy way, but also provides geological insights and facts about the caves explored in North Florida and the importance of these underwater treasures. With the involvement of Jim Bowden, Lamar Hres, John Orlowski and Bill Rennaker (key characters in the international cave diving community), Facing Darkness gave me a different and personal approach to this popular diving field.

The movie by Lasselin, manages to achieve its clear objective, to give the vision of cave diving, by the cave divers themselves, and by doing this, Lasselin succeeded to inspire me (and also my wife!) about the safety and serious training behind the real cave divers willing to go to the depths and labyrinths of these magnificent rock monsters waiting to be dived.

I don’t know yet if my wife will let me go Cave Diving, at the moment working as an Open Water Instructor I believe that FACING DARKNESS is a must have to any serious scuba diving library and film collection. Personally I would advise any diver interested in considering cave diving to see this film first. Not only will the film give you a clear idea about the seriousness of cave diving, but also about the spiritual journey that any cave diver takes every time they are faced with a new challenge, and with a new cave.

Facing Darkness was directed by Nathalie Lassein

And Produced by Pixnat.
