Utila – Keeping Politics out of Diving!!!!

In the last week the media have been reporting of unrest and demonstrations in the large cities of Honduras, following the ousting of President Mel Zelaya.  Whilst the international community has been quick to condemn Honduras’ government and issue travel advisories to this Central American country, the dive community in the Bay Islands continues to welcome travellers, backpackers and guests to their Caribbean paradise.

The international airports in San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa receive daily flights, and there are connecting domestic flights to La Ceiba and the Bay Islands.  The demonstrations have mainly been confined to the larger cities, and travel within the country still remains safe, though in places peaceful protests (from both sides) cause minor inconveniences to land traffic, similar to what can be expected in London or Washington when demonstrations take place.  There is a 9pm curfew in place for the moment, to allow people, peace and quiet in the evenings, and assured safety.

The island of Utila is located approximately 40 kilometres from the Honduran mainland, and is almost another world, with mainly English mainly and a vibrant and bohemian dive community residing on the island.  This week on Utila we have received divers on a daily basis who have travelled both overland and by domestic air flights to Utila, and they are rewarded with a part of paradise.  The diving conditions, are excellent with 20-30 meter (60-100 foot) visibility, minimal currents, and Whale sharks and Dolphins continue to amaze our visitors.

Our Divemaster training programs are offered weekly and a PADI Instructor Development Course is hosted each month in our award winning PADI Career Development Centre, the ‘Utila Dive Centre’.

We encourage all potential visitors to not be discouraged by recent media sensationalism, and to keep the politics away from diving, and continue to support the dive community and be amazed by the great diving and training programs offered on Utila, please feel free to contact us for specific information.
